Woodworkers donate toys for kids in crisis

A group of talented woodworkers donated a series of handcrafted toys to local law enforcement to be passed out to any children experiencing traumatic situations.

David Wiper and the Guild of Oregon Woodworkers presented the Gresham Police Department with dozens of toys — wooden race cars and dinosaurs, to wagons and other animals. Each one took hours of work to create.

The wooden toys are just the latest items that can be used by police officers to help distract and brighten what otherwise is the worst moments for local children. They will be distributed through their Buddy Bear program, which has stuffed animals in all patrol vehicles just in case. The Gresham Police also have "Blanket Buddies" — donated, fleece blankets that are often delivered alongside the other toys.

Volunteers needed for arts festival

The Gresham Arts Festival is looking for devoted volunteers to help at the Saturday, July 16, event. Volunteers will receive a t-shirt and lunch voucher from event sponsor Sunny Hans. Those interested can learn more about volunteering for the at the city's website.

The 20th annual Gresham Arts Festival is one of city's biggest events of the year and will showcase more than 125 artists from the Pacific Northwest, Kids Village, live music, multicultural performances and local cuisine.

Gresham History Museum showcases town's first TV

People can go visit what is believed to be the first-ever television in the city of Gresham, owned more than 70 years ago by a futuristic resident, at the local history museum.

In 1947, before Portland had its own television station, Gresham's Hazel Keene entered a Fred Meyer competition to write a jingle for a major watch band company. Their tune won, not only kudos but also a Philco console TV set, which is believed to be the first one used in the Gresham area. A D V E R T I S I N G | Continue reading below

Unfortunately the Keene family wasn't able to receive any television signal on the set, only watching snowy static. Portland's first station didn't go on the air until September 1952 when KPTV, channel 27, was the first commercially licensed ultra-high frequency station in the world with a tower atop Council Crest's Healy Heights.

The Keenes, who lived in the Rockwood neighborhood, didn't mind their static-only viewing, watching the "snow" flicker on the screen.

That Philco set is on display at the Gresham History Museum, 410 N. Main Ave., which is open 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday-Saturday, and noon to 4 p.m. Sunday. Admission is free.
