National Teddy Bear Day is observed on September 9 every year to honour the memory of one of our favourite soft toys 'teddy bears'. The day is observed to thank our teddy bears for their amazing companionship, the wonderful moments we had with them in our childhood and for all the days and nights they comforted us when we were upset.

A teddy bear is not only popular among children but also holds a special place in the adults' hearts too. National Teddy Bear Day is a day set aside for everyone to celebrate the adorable stuffed creatures and make them the focus of attention. Most of us must have fond memories of playing with our favourite teddy bears, for instance, cuddling them when we used to sleep at night.

The history of National Teddy Bear Day is closely linked to the 26th President of the United States (U.S.) Theodore Roosevelt and this day was created to commemorate him. Roosevelt went on a bear hunting trip near Mississippi and other hunters had managed to capture a small bear. But the President refused to kill the bear, saying that would be 'unsportsmanlike' and the news gained public attention.

The newspapers started publishing political cartoons about 'Teddy' and the bear and following this, a shop owner named Morris Michtom and his wife made stuffed bears and placed them in their shop. The couple named the bears 'Teddy Bears' after taking permission from Roosevelt.

The teddy bears started gaining popularity in the U.S. and Margarete Steiff, a toymaker, also started making stuffed bears. Steiff's nephew Richard Steiff designed the world's first toy bear with jointed arms and legs and an American businessman placed an order for 3,000 such bears. And from 1906 onwards, the stuffed toys came to be known as 'Teddy bears'.

You can celebrate National Teddy Bear Day by spending some quality time with your favourite teddy bear. On this special day, you can also gift attractive teddy bears to your friends, family members and loved ones.

You can also visit a nearby teddy bear store and gift yourself a teddy bear such as Winnie-the-Pooh, Paddington Bear, the Corduroy and the Berenstain Bear family. If you are not able to go out due to the novel coronavirus pandemic, you can post a picture of your teddy bear on social media using the hashtag #NationalTeddyBearDay2021.
