New Delhi: National Teddy Bear Day is celebrated annually on September 9 and is dedicated to the adorable teddy bear. The day provides an opportunity for people all over the world to take their teddies out of the cupboard and thank them for their companionship and the wonderful times they have shared with them. The teddy bear is one of the most popular toys among children and occupies a special space in the hearts of many adults as well. It is also a symbol of love for the couple. On this day, all teddy lovers come together to enjoy a teddy bear's favourite activity, having a picnic, as immortalised in the classic song, 'Teddy Bear's Picnic', which was written in 1907, shortly after teddy bears were first manufactured in Europe and America.
The observation of Teddy Bear Day has roots back in 1902 when Theodore Roosevelt was serving as the 26th president of the United States. Getting an invitation from Governor Andrew H Longino of Mississippi, Theodore Roosevelt went on a bear hunting trip near Mississippi, in November 1902, but he refused to shoot a bear cub. The incident spread across the country via the national news like a fire in the forest. The stories glorify the image of the president and his reluctance to shoot the bear, as he was a big game hunter.
Clifford Berryman, who was a political cartoonist, witnessed the report and decided to parody the president's unwillingness to shoot the bear comically. His cartoon got a space in the Washington Post published on November 16, 1902.
Inspired by the cartoon, Morris Michtom, the proprietor of a Brooklyn candy shop, and his wife Rose decided to produce a plush toy bear for the president, who refused to shoot the bear. Michtom also sent a letter to the President, asking Roosevelt if it would be possible for the new toy to be called 'Teddy Bear'.
After obtaining Roosevelt's permission to use his name, Michtom mass-produced the toy bears. The idea became so successful that within a few years, he established a soft toy firm to manufacture them.
Teddy Bear Day can be celebrated in various ways. One can dig up their favourite childhood teddy bear and click some selfies with it. Share the pics on their social media platform and encourage your friends, family members, and followers to share images of their favourite teddy bear from when they were a child. One can also celebrate the day by bringing a new teddy bear to their home.
