Following the tolling of bells 21 times at noon today, Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Floresville invites community members to gather in the church to pray a rosary for the victims of yesterday’s school shooting in Uvalde, and for the Uvalde community. Floresville community members and all Wilson County residents are invited to stop at noon to pray for the victims of the school shooting yesterday in Uvalde, and for the Uvalde community.
Law-enforcement and first responder agencies in the community will hear an announcement just before noon, inviting radio silence, said Floresville Mayor Cissy Gonzalez-Dippel, who coordinated the prayer effort with the Floresville Ministerial Alliance.
“At noon, everyone is invited to observe 60 seconds of silence beginning at noon,” the mayor said. After that, the church bells in Floresville will toll 21 times for the student and two teachers killed by a lone gunman at Robb Elementary School Tuesday.
Bells also will be heard at Floresville City Hall, played via the building’s public announcement system. Community members are invited to stop where they are at noon and pray, or join the minute of silence and prayer at City Hall, said the mayor.
After the bells ring at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, community members are invited to join in praying a rosary for the Uvalde community.
A teddy bear and plushie drive also has been organized in La Vernia; the collection point for new and gently loved plush toys is St. Ann Catholic Church on U.S. 87.
The city of Floresville is looking for other ways to help, and has already contacted the South Texas Blood & Tissue Center to host a blood drive; no date or time has been set, Gonzalez-Dippel said. Other support also is being organized.
“We’ll do what we can when we find out what the needs are,” the mayor said.
