Extremely rich people are not like the rest of us. They buy and sell high-end properties the way the rest of us buy shoes. And Aileen Getty, scion of the oil family, is a great example. To wit: In June, 2019, she purchased a stunning townhouse in New York’s West Village from venture capitalist Adam Dell for $19 million. Now, just three years later, the serial buyer-and-seller is off to pastures new, asking $25 million for the spiffy house.
Listed with Compass’s Carl Gambino, the townhouse is beautifully situated, on a cobbled street that’s neither too far west nor too east. It’s close to the trendy Meatpacking District, the Hudson River Park, and all the fantastic shopping and restaurants of Greenwich Village.
Built in 1910, the 20-foot-wide townhouse boasts five bedrooms and a whopping ten bathrooms. It was thoroughly renovated by Dell, including all new mechanical systems, so Ms. Getty, or her decorator, just had to add her own personal touches. And you know when you’re talking about a Getty, the personal touches are going to be unique and high end. Along with the artwork, eye candy includes the Fritz Hansen teddy bear chair from the 1940s as well as the Samarkind Suzani textile that hangs behind a bed in one of the guest bedrooms.
With two seating areas, the living room sports its original wood-burning marble fireplace, while the eat-in kitchen, which eschews the current trend for a minimalistic look akin to a morgue, features a very handsome island snack bar and two glass-fronted fridges. Steel-trimmed glass doors lead to a vine-draped balcony for al fresco dining.
There’s an en-suite guest bedroom and a small gym on the ground floor, along with a state-of-the-art home cinema that spills out to a stone-paved rear garden enveloped in greenery. Encompassing the entire third floor, the main bedroom boasts tons of closet space — two walk-ins and a wardrobe-lined dressing hall — along with a wood-burning fireplace and a marble bath that showcases a vintage two-sink marble vanity.
In addition to the serene rear garden and the dining balcony, there’s a terrace outside the main bedroom and a landscaped roof terrace complete with a six-person spa.
This is, of course, just one of Ms. Getty’s homes. Currently, on the West Coast, she resides in Los Feliz, in a midcentury house she bought from Maroon 5’s James Valentine a couple years ago. Last year, she sold a Malibu home, which she bought from James Perse and sold to New York heiress Nicole Ross Eloff, and previous to that she owned a big compound in the Hollywood Hills, which she bought from a Walmart heiress and sold to Katy Perry. (Perry since sold that place to Michael Chow, owner of the Mr. Chow restaurant chain, who still owns it.)
Thinking of a pair of new shoes for autumn? Ms. Getty is probably planning her latest house purchase. Stay tuned.
