Wherever you live it’s easy to forget all the amazing things on the doorstep, but with fuel costs soaring, remaining local this summer has added benefits.
How often do you hear ‘but there’s nothing to do round here’? It’s definitely not true and to prove it, we’ve compiled this list of dozens of days out on the doorstep.
There are ideas to suit young and old, families, singles and couples, those who love adventure and the outdoors and those seeking something more sedate. Best of all, it’s all within half an hour of Spalding and many of the activities are free.

Get creative – five crafty options

Offering art workshops for children and adults including a programme of special summer events. Summer holiday workshops include a ‘seaside boats’ session of collage, painting and stitching, one on seascape painting and opportunities to make jewellery.

Usually open Tuesday to Saturday 10am to 4pm, Doodles offers lots of art and craft opportunities including painting ceramics. A range of special summer holiday workshops are being offered including the chance for adults and children to work on fun wide mouth frog sculptures and flower plaques.

Get creative and learn new skills at this textiles and craft studio where alpacas usually graze in paddocks next door. Upcoming sessions include a six-week course on the fundamentals of dressmaking. There are also one-off children’s activities.

Create your own masterpiece as a gift or keepsake by painting a pot, plate, mug or figure. There are also opportunities to sign up for workshops to learn to throw on a wheel as well as toddler messy fun sessions. Search for @paintapot.plce on Facebook.
Enjoy a walk – five ideas
Starts at: Springfields Outlet Shopping and Festival Gardens, Camelgate, PE12 6EU
Either complete the whole 12.5 mile (20km) route or cut this down to a 4.5 mile (seven km) route. The long route takes in the Coronation Channel, Vernatt’s Drain and South Drove Drain and keeps you beside water for almost its entire duration.
Enjoy friendship, fresh air and fitness with these led walks of varying lengths at locations across South Holland and South Kesteven. Walks are held weekly in Spalding, Donington, Crowland, Holbeach and Long Sutton among other places. Walks are usually followed by a chat and a cuppa in a café.

4 Long and short walks across South Holland

There are lots of trails to enjoy at Bourne Wood for those who want a long or short walk. Look out for special events, including a mini beast hunt on Sunday, July 31, meet 2pm at the main car park. £2 donation appreciated. Limited number of nets to use.

2 Holbeach Music and Beer Festival

The 8th Holbeach Music and Beer Festival has a superheroes theme and brings together a huge programme of live music, trade stands, a kids’ zone with sandpit and entertainment as well as beer. Organisers advise buying tickets in advance.

Discover Pulvertoft Flowers where artisan flowers are grown and flower and bee themed workshops hosted. There’ll be a children’s treasure hunt, table tennis, plant stall, Lincolnshire Honey talking about bees and farm shop featuring local producers. Entry is free with donations going to Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire Air Ambulance.
4 Free ‘Give it a Go’ family day and Charity Football Match

Enjoy free activities with a whole host of sports clubs and community groups that operate within the district. You can also try out a mobile climbing wall, crazy golf and ride-on carts, plus watch the Chairman’s Charity Football Match raising money for the mental health charity MIND.
5 Spalding Rugby Club summer fun day

Races are due to take place 12pm to 3.30pm, followed by trophy presentations in Market Square. There will be stalls, street food, a funfair and marching band with an 80s theme. The event is free for spectators and £10 per team member for rafters.
9 Exotic Pet Refuge open day

Visit the charity sanctuary that takes in and cares for unwanted, neglected and abandoned exotic animals and rescued British wildlife.

Three bands including headliners Famous Unknowns, plus a DJ set from Circa, will appear at this family friendly beer and music event with kids entertainment and inflatables. Entry is £5 for over 14s and £3 for under.
Enjoy a treasure hunt? Geocaching is great fun for adults and kids. Download the free app and navigate to a hidden object (often a small capsule containing a log to sign and date when you find it and leave in place for the next seeker). They’re hidden across Lincolnshire – and the world! Add to the fun by hiding one of your own.
Across South Holland we’re blessed with riverside spots, parks and gardens where you can enjoy a picnic. Taking a packed lunch on a day out is a great way to save cash too. So either make your picnic the main event or just a bit of money-saving fun within your day.
3 Fly a kite or frisbee
As much fun if you’re nine or 59, flying a kite or throwing frisbee is a simple pleasure never to be forgotten.
Go on, even if you don’t have kids, give it a go – we dare you!
Want to perk up a walk or day out (especially for those with little legs and lots of whinges)? Try nature bingo. Give everyone a list of items to spot and tick off along the way. A few ideas are: A duck, a pink flower, a feather. Let your imagination guide you.

Find adventure – five ways to get your pulse racing

Discover the vast collection of ‘curiosities,’ artefacts, books and archives. Founded in 1710 the society is now a charity with a mission to further knowledge and appreciation of the arts, sciences and humanities – and is open to women despite the name! Limited opening times.

Visit the country’s tallest windmill. Access to the Granary Tearooms and Mill Shop is free. Access to the Mill Tower is by guided tour. Time your visit well to see grinding in progress and buy flour produced with wind power.
1. Ayscoughfee Hall Museum and Gardens, Spalding
Often described as the jewel in South Holland’s crown – and for good reason. You’ll never tire of the beautiful gardens. Entry to them and the museum is free. There’s a play park and aviary. The café has just been refurbished too. Find Ayscoughfee Hall Museum and Gardens on Facebook.

Here you’ll find extensive play equipment for younger children and teens including a zip wire, tall slide, sand pit, outdoor gym and assault course. The park is vast and there’s a specific off-lead area for dogs.
Station Road, Surfleet PE11 4DB
An attractive park with a circular trail around the edge that includes a smattering of small obstacles for those who want added adventure, though they can easily be bypassed. Not as scenic as other parks but well equipped with play equipment ideal for primary school age children and a large open field for football and games. Be aware that there are no toilets nearby.

A beautiful park full of established trees and pretty ponds with a well equipped and modern play area at the back of the park and accessible also from Churchill Avenue.

Discover history – five places to visit
East Street, Crowland PE6 0EN
Visit the beautiful and historic Crowland Abbey whose roots date back to the eighth century. There's plenty of history to explore - and regular events, tours and exhibitions.
Whilst in Crowland don’t miss the Holy Trinity Bridge, built in 1360-1390, under which the River Welland used to flow.
Discover the buildings in Spalding where people of historical note once lived, worked or stayed including The Red Lion Hotel, in Market Place, where music star Jimi Hendrix stayed after the famed Barbecue 67 gig that also featured Pink Floyd.

Discover south Lincolnshire's market towns
Visit a market town and take a trip around the unique shops and attractions while you’re there.
Discover lots of unique shops and cafes. Don’t miss Laddies ice creams, at 32 Church Street, established in the town in 1922. Market day is Thursday.
You’ll find lots of independent shops including much loved bookshop and café Bookmark, 18-20 The Crescent and Flowers and Things offering flowers and gifts at 3 Red Lion Street. There are an abundance of cafes, pubs and restaurants to choose from. Markets are held Tuesdays and Saturdays.
Market day is Friday which brings additional vibrancy to Long Sutton where you’ll find the traditional department store Pledgers, established in 1945, which includes a toy department. Worth a look also are the environmentally friendly earth-bunded homes on the Unity Gardens development, in Bridge Road.
Enjoy the market on Friday and stroll the town’s shops. Take a trip to Snowden Field, which has plentiful play equipment as well as skate ramps. The wildlife pond and picnic area on Gravel Causeway are also worth a look.
Stroll North Street, where you’ll find Bourne Bookshop among other gems, West Street where the Craft Centre lives, South Street where Don’t Lose Hope gift shop is one of the attractions and Abbey Road, where you’ll find one of the town’s eateries Ginger Fox Café. Markets are on Thursdays.

South Holland District Council has put together Summer Fun 2022 - a brochure of 184 activities and events to put on over the next few weeks to keep the kids entertained while they’re away from school. A full day of learning about horses suitable for older beginners (aged seven upwards) or those who have some experience. Will include achievement awards covering different subjects.

This year’s theme is Gadgeteers to inspire youngsters to consider the science all around them and children are encouraged to read six books during the summer holidays with prizes along the way.

Children’s workshops throughout the summer holidays. For all different age groups and of different styles - dancing, crafts, slime, glitter tattoos, parties and much more. They will be holding baby and toddler classes where older siblings will too be welcome. Polka Dot will also be running a play cafe for children to come be free to explore and play and grownups can have something to eat/drink.
