May 2—Not all the animals were cuddly toys at the Teddy Bear Family Picnic on Sunday at the Rye Patch in Aiken.

The Aiken Volunteer Mounted Unit's riders were there with their horses, including Munchie, whose unicorn costume included a shiny gold-colored horn.

In addition to petting horses, attendees could paint, blow bubbles and play games.

Boxed lunches also were served.

When a thunderstorm interrupted the activities, the Teddy Bear Family Picnic was moved from the Rye Patch lawn to the estate's house, which is an event and meeting facility.

Inside, there were plenty of chairs and tables, so the participating families could sit down and finish their meals while staying dry.

The City of Aiken's Department of Parks, Recreation and Tourism organized the Teddy Bear Family Picnic.

"We were wanting to do something right before Mother's Day (May 8) that all different types of families could enjoy," said Alison Cribb, a recreation supervisor for the department. "We wanted something simple that was easy to do with children of any age. We said, 'What's more fun than a family picnic?' I have a little girl who is obsessed with her stuffed animals and so, we went from there."

In addition to teddy bears, the child guests brought other kinds of toy creatures with them. There was at least one seal.

“I’ve seen many venomous snakes out in the trails. I never fell on one,” Roberts said.
